Alaska Airlines Checked Baggage Requirements

Despite its name, Alaska Airlines offers flights to and from many destinations other than Alaska. You can also take Alaska Airlines flights to and from Washington State, California, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii and many other destinations. If you plan to fly with Alaska Airlines, learn about the checked baggage requirements in advance. This will allow you to pack your bag or bags accordingly and avoid needing to discard items or publicly repack at the airport.
  1. Size

    • Each bag you check on an Alaska Airlines flight must measure no more than 62 linear inches if you wish to pay the standard one-way price of $20 for each of the first three checked bags for regular passengers (as of September 2010). To calculate the size of your bag in linear inches, measure its height at the highest point, width at the widest point and length at the longest point. Add these three numbers together to obtain the size of your bag in linear inches. For instance, if your bag is 15 inches high, 12 inches wide and 30 inches long, it would measure 57 linear inches. If your bag measures over 62 linear inches, you will need to pay an extra fee of $50 one-way for each bag measuring 63 to 80 linear inches and $100 one-way for each bag measuring 81 to 115 linear inches.

    Weight

    • Your bag or bags must weigh no more than 50 pounds each if you wish to pay the standard one-way price of $20 for each of the first three checked bags for regular passengers (as of September 2010). If a bag you are checking weighs over 50 pounds, you will need to pay excess weight charges. As of September 2010, these charges are $50 for each bag you check that weighs 51 to 100 lbs.

    Prohibited Items

    • You may never include certain items in your checked baggage, regardless of whether that baggage meets the criteria regarding size and weight. These items include explosives (such as fireworks and gunpowder), matches, lighters, pressurized containers and certain household chemicals such as drain cleaners and solvents.
