Baggage Policy for American Airlines

American Airlines has a baggage policy to protect passengers and airline employees. According to the American Airlines website, at certain times of the year, such as around the holidays, there is a limit on baggage, boxes and packages allowed per person.
  1. Baggage Policy

    • Each traveler may bring one carry-on bag, measuring less than 45 inches total or 22 inches long, 9 inches high and 14 inches wide. Checked bags should weigh less than 50 pounds, and have combined measurements less than 62 inches total.

    Carry-Ons

    • As of November 2010, one carry-on bag and one personal item per traveler are allowable free of charge. The width, length and height of the carry-on may not exceed 36 inches and the item must be able to fit under the seat. Personal items include a book, newspaper, outerwear, snack, pillow, small blanket, child safety seat, purse, diaper bag, briefcase and assistance devices.

    Fees

    • As of November 2010, travelers traveling with a first class or business class ticket do not have to pay for the first three bags or suitcases. Travelers flying economy class could be subject to a $25, $30 or $50 fee per bag based on travel destination.

    Baggage Tips

    • Certain items, such as ink cartridges and toner weighing more than 16 ounces, are not allowed in either checked baggage or carry-on luggage. Alcoholic beverages, under 70 percent by volume, can travel in certain quantities. Alcohol in excess of 70 percent by volume may not travel.
