American Airlines Baggage Information

In compliance with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), American Airlines has developed baggage guidelines for passengers. These guidelines help ensure safety and give passengers a clear idea of what is and is not acceptable for air travel.
  1. Checked Baggage

    • American Airlines charges a checked-bag fee to those passengers flying Economy class within the United States and to Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The fee is $25 for the first checked bag and $35 for the second checked bag. The third, fourth and fifth checked bags are $100 each and $150 for any bags above that.

    Carry-On Baggage

    • American Airlines allows passengers to carry on one piece of baggage and one personal item at no charge. Carry-on baggage must fit in the overhead bin and measure no more than 22 x 14 x 9 inches. American Airlines considers personal items to include purses, camera bags, small backpacks, laptop bags or any similar item that can fit underneath the seat and measures no more than 36 linear inches.

    Liquids

    • In accordance with TSA regulations, American Airlines allows passengers to carry on containers of liquid as long as they meet specific criteria. All containers of liquid must be packed in one clear, resealable plastic bag that is one quart in size. Each container of liquid must be no more than 3.4 ounces.

    Overweight and Oversize Baggage

    • Any piece of baggage weighing more than 50 pounds or measuring more than 62 linear inches will be subject to additional fees. American Airlines will not accept baggage weighing more than 100 pounds or measuring more than 126 linear inches on a domestic flight. These guidelines may be more restrictive when traveling internationally.
