Delta Baggage Specifications

Whether you are planning a weekend getaway or a round-the-world trip, chances are you will need to bring some luggage along. With many airlines imposing fees on baggage, it is wise to research a particular airline's baggage policies before traveling. Delta outlines rules for what passengers are allowed to carry onboard, how many pieces a passenger can check and sets fees for checked bags.
  1. Carry-On

    • Passengers can carry one bag and one personal item for free. Bags cannot be bigger than 45 linear inches, as measured by adding length, width and height together. Personal items can be a purse or briefcase, camera bag, diaper bag, laptop case or similar items. Other personal items that do not count toward either the personal item or one-bag limit are: jackets, umbrellas, food that was bought after passing through security and duty-free items. Special items such as strollers, child seats and assistive devices, such as wheelchairs or crutches, also do not count toward these limits.

    Checked Baggage Limits

    • Bags should weigh less than 50 lbs. and cannot be more than 62 linear inches, as measured by adding length, width and height together. For heavier and larger bags, Delta will assess additional fees. A passenger may not check more than 10 bags total, and some flights have maximum limits that are lower than that. Refer to Delta's detailed tables for limits by travel region.

    Checked Baggage Fees

    • Delta charges fees for some pieces of baggage but not for others. The fee for each piece is applied at the time you buy your ticket and not on the day you travel. Fees also depend on where you are traveling. As of November 2010, for travel between the U.S., Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the first checked bag costs $23 if checked in online or $25 if checked in at the airport. The second checked bag costs $32 if checked in online or $35 if checked in at the airport. For travel between the U.S. or Canada and Mexico, Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda and Cayman Islands, there is no fee for the first checked bag. The second checked bag costs $27 if checked in online and $30 if done at the airport. If traveling between the U.S. or Canada and Europe, or between Europe and India, the first checked bag is free; the second costs $50 if checked in online or $55 if done at the airport. Check with Delta for fees for other destinations outside North America and Europe because fees depend on the bag's size and weight.
