Airport Baggage Weight Limits

Airlines have put several limits in place on how much your luggage can weigh. Airport officials check baggage weight before boarding to determine if the bags meet the restrictions. Check with your airline in advance to avoid surprises at the airport.
  1. Carry-On Baggage

    • Both domestic and international checked bagged have a weight limit of 50 pounds (or 23 kilograms) per bag with a limit of one bag per passenger. The bag should also have a combined dimension of 45 inches (see Reference 1).

    Checked Baggage

    • Checked baggage also has a maximum weight limit of 50 pounds for most domestic and international flights. The number of free checked bags depends on the airline and the destination.

    Exceptions

    • Passengers traveling from the United States to Brazil can carry up to 70 pounds in each checked bag. Other international destinations can have different rules, so check with your airline for specific information.
