Baggage Limitations for Delta Air Lines

Delta, as do other airlines, sets limits and charges fees on checked baggage, prompting passengers to carry more luggage on board. Review Delta's baggage policies and limitations before you fly to be prepared.
  1. Carry-Ons

    • Delta allows passengers one bag and one personal item free of charge. Bags are limited to 45 linear inches and must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat. Personal items are things such as a purse, briefcase, camera or diaper bag, or a laptop in its case.

    Carry-On Exemptions

    • You may also carry on free of charge: jackets or outerwear, umbrellas, duty-free items, food purchased after clearing security. In addition, you can carry on special items such as strollers, child seats or assistive devices such as, wheelchairs or crutches. These items do not count toward your one bag or one personal item limits.

    Size Limits

    • Checked bags should not exceed 50 pounds and may not be more than 62 linear inches. Delta may charge additional fees on bags that exceed those limits. Passengers in first or business class are allowed bags that weigh up to 70 lbs.

    Number Limits

    • Passengers can check no more than 10 bags per ticket, with some flights having lower limits. For example, those traveling to or from Key West, Florida, may only check one bag. First and business class passengers are allowed to check up to three bags free.

    Fees

    • Fees for checked bags depend on your travel destination, when you booked your flight and whether you are checking in your bags online or at the ticket counter. On some flights, Delta charges for each checked bag; on other flights, the first checked bag is free and the second checked bag incurs a fee. In addition, some customers, such as those in first class or active duty personnel are allowed three checked bags for free. Consult Delta's detailed fee table for exact information.
