Lufthansa Luggage Restrictions

Individual airlines operate with different luggage restrictions. Airlines can also have varying restrictions depending on the flight route. Making sure of the guidelines can reduce the risk of luggage being rejected, and can prevent further cost.
  1. Free Baggage Allowance

    • Lufthansa operates with a free baggage allowance. This allowance is determined by the booking class and destination. Weight rather than the number of bags determines allowances on flights from and within Europe. On long-haul flights, the number of pieces of luggage, as well as weight, come into play.

    Carry-on Baggage

    • Economy passengers are restricted to one piece of hand baggage. In first and business class, two pieces are permitted depending on flight destinations or airplane size. Liquids and gels may be carried in hand luggage, as long as they are in a transparent bag, and no bigger than 3.38 ounces (100 milliliters). Baggage size must be no more than 22 x 16 x 8 inches and no heavier than 18 pounds.

    Excess & Special Baggage

    • Certain sporting equipment is permissible. Any excess charge is determined by size and weight. A table has been produced in PDF format on Lufthansa's Excess Baggage link.

Animals may be permitted on flights provided 24 hours notice is given and depending on destination laws.

Hazardous or dangerous items are not permitted on Lufthansa flights.
