How Do Airlines Check Baggage Size?

Airlines restrict the number and size of carry-on and checked baggage per passenger. Each airline has its own regulations, varying from domestic to international flights and among travel classes (economy, business and first). Exceeding the limit can result in a fee.
  1. Size

    • Most airlines do not allow checked bags that exceed 50 to 70 pounds per bag on any flights. For carry-on bags, some airlines do not allow the combination of all carry-on baggage to exceed 40 pounds, while others will allow you to carry only one bag that weighs no more than 50 pounds.

    Dimensions

    • For both domestic and international flights, checked bags cannot exceed 62 inches in combined length, height and width, and carry-on bags cannot exceed 22 inches by 9 inches by 14 inches, or 45 inches in total. Most airlines specify that carry-on luggage must be able to fit in an overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you. If traveling with special or oversized items, you should consult with your airline for policies and restrictions.

    Quantity

    • Some airlines charge a fee for each checked bag, while others allow you to check one bag for free. Before packing for your trip, consult with your airline to determine restrictions and allowances.
