United Airlines Carry-On Regulations

Like all airlines, United Airlines has a series of regulations about the kind of luggage you can carry onto the plane. Familiarizing yourself with the regulations in advance can help avoid stress and added expense at the airport.
  1. One Bag

    • As of September 2010, United Airlines permits each passenger to carry one piece of luggage and one personal item onto the plane as hand luggage. Personal items include objects like a laptop computer, briefcase or purse.

    Size

    • The item of luggage you choose to carry onto the plane must be small enough to fit into the overhead lockers. Specifically, it must not measure more than 9 x 14 x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm). Items larger than this must be checked in as hold luggage.

    Exempted Items

    • United Airlines sets out a set of specified items that do not count toward the limit of one bag and one personal item. These include devices to assist movement, such as canes or crutches; infant seats or strollers; child safety seats (for kids with their own tickets); coats and hats; umbrellas (to a limit of one per person); a reasonable amount of reading material and food and drinks, which will be consumed on board. All these items must be stowed either in the overhead locker or underneath the seat in front.

Regulations about Liquids, Gels and Aerosols

    • United Airlines complies fully with international guidelines about carrying liquids, gels and aerosols onto planes. The Transportation Security Administration's 3-1-1 rule is an easy way to remember what you can pack in your carry-on luggage. Liquid containers must be 3.4 oz. or less, and must be packed into a 1-quart-size clear plastic bag. Each passenger is allowed one plastic bag.

    Check

    • Always check with United Airlines in advance of your journey, since regulations can change at short notice. Taking a few minutes to check that you comply could help you avoid trouble at the airport.
