United Airlines Carry on Requirements

United Airlines, based in Chicago, Ill., is one of the largest passenger airlines in the United States. Like all large U.S. airlines, it charges fees for checked baggage. United does not charge for carry-on luggage, but there are several rules related to the size, contents and types of bags that may be carried on to a flight. If you are using United Airlines on your next trip, you should be aware of these rules.

  1. Size

    • According to United Airlines, all carry-on bags must fit under a seat or in the overhead bin and be no larger than 9-by-14-by-22 inches, or 45 linear inches long (whichever is less). You may be required to check your bag if the airline determines that it cannot be safely stowed during the flight.

    Contents

    • Per federal regulations, liquids, gels or aerosols must be in containers of 3 ounces or less and fit into a 1-quart-sized plastic bag if you wish to carry them in your carry-on bag. However, baby formula, medications and juices, snacks or other liquids for those with diabetes may be carried on to a flight in quantities greater than 3 ounces, provided that you present them to an officer at the security checkpoint. Guns, knives, mace, tear gas and other weapons may not be present in your carry-on bag.

    Personal Items

    • According to United Airlines, passengers are allowed only one carry-on bag per person per flight. However, passengers may also carry on one "personal item," such as a diaper bag, purse, laptop computer or briefcase.
