Passengers are allowed a personal item such as a briefcase or purse, and one bag. Carry-on bags are measured in dimensions rather than weight, and must not exceed 9-by-14-by-22 inches or 45 linear inches. All carry-on bags must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat. Assistive devices and child safety items do not count toward carry-on baggage allowance.
Gone are the days when passengers were allowed to check the first bag for free. Now, economy ticket-holders must pay $25 for the first suitcase and $35 for the second one. Suitcases must weigh less than 50 lbs. For First Class, Business Class, Military personnel and members of United's elite groups, the fees are waived for the first two suitcases.

Premier and Star Alliance Silver passengers are allowed two suitcases weighing up to 50 lbs. For passengers traveling on First or Business class, the allowance is two suitcases weighing up to 70 lbs. Finally, military passengers as well as Global Services, 1K, Premier Executive and Star Alliance Gold are permitted to check three bags weighing up to 70 lbs each.
Economy, Premier and Star Alliance Silver passengers traveling to international destinations outside of Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe may check two suitcases weighing up to 50 lbs each. First and Business class passengers are permitted two suitcases weighing up to 70 lbs each. Military personnel and passengers holding a ticket for Global Services, 1K, Star Alliance Gold and Premier Executive have a baggage allowance of three bags weighing up to 70 lbs each.
