International Weight Limits for United Airlines

An individual bag must weigh no more than 100 pounds to be accepted as checked baggage regardless of destination. The free allowance varies by international destination, frequent flier status and cabin class.
  1. Travel between North America and Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean

    • Economy passengers may check one bag free of charge as long as the bag weighs 50 pounds or less. Bags weighing 50 to 100 pounds are assessed a $200 excess weight fee to all destinations except for the Caribbean and Mexico, where the fee is $100. First class and business class customers and those who maintain Mileage Plus Premier Executive or higher status may check bags up to 70 pounds free of charge.

Travel between North America and all other International Destinations

    • Baggage weight rules for other international destinations are the same for the most part -- economy passengers may check two bags up to 50 pounds each free of charge. There are two exceptions: Economy passengers going to Brazil can check two bags up to 70 pounds each, and for passengers going to Central American destinations, excess weight fees decrease to $100.

    Travel between Asian cities

    • Passengers whose itineraries are wholly within Asia are governed by different baggage rules that limit weights to 44 total pounds for economy customers, 66 pounds for business and 88 pounds for first class. These are total -- not per-bag -- weights. Elite Mileage Plus customers may check an additional 44 pounds.

    Considerations

    • Special rules apply to active-duty military customers. For customers with flights originating from the United Kingdom, the bag weight limit is 70 pounds. Additional fees apply for extra or oversize bags regardless of weight. Travel between the U.S. and Canada is governed by domestic baggage rules.
