When traveling in the United States, United Airlines asks that all passengers 18 and older show a federal- or state-issued photo identification. The identification must include the passenger's name, date of birth and gender and an expiration date. Acceptable forms of identification include: U.S. passport, driver's license, military ID, permanent resident card, Canadian driver's license, an airline- or airport-issued ID and, for those passengers who are not United States citizens, a foreign passport. Passengers who do not produce a valid form of identification may be subject to additional security screening or may not be able to fly with United at all.
Passengers traveling anywhere in United Airlines' route network are permitted to carry on one piece of luggage and a personal item. Bags brought into the cabin must fit in the overhead compartments or completely under passenger seats. Dimensions of baggage brought into the cabin cannot exceed 9-by-14-by-22 inches, and keep in mind, that any bag that cannot fit properly may have to be checked to your final destination.
Passengers are permitted to bring a personal item on board as well. United defines personal items as a purse, briefcase or a laptop computer. Passengers may bring food, reading material and infant seats on board in excess of their personal item and carry-on baggage.
Domestically, United Airlines permits all passengers up to two checked pieces of luggage for a fee. United charges passengers $25 for the first checked item and $35 for the second. United offers passengers a discount on their baggage fees if they decide to check-in for their flight online or at a kiosk at the airport, rather than with a ticket agent. Passengers traveling in United First or United Business class are exempt from checked baggage fees. Passengers traveling internationally to or from the United States are permitted to check one item free of charge with an additional piece costing $50. United's First and Business class passengers may check two items for free.
