Guidelines vary depending on the baggage type. Passengers on United are allowed one carry-on piece of luggage with a combined length, width and height of less than 45 inches and one other personal piece like a laptop bag, purse or diaper bag. For checked bags, additional fees are charged for bags weighing more than 50 pounds or larger than 62 linear inches.
Some items are not allowed onboard in carry-on luggage. Restrictions include knives, large scissors and many types of sporting goods, according to the Transportation Security Administration. When carrying on liquids, these must be in 3-ounce or less containers and the containers must be placed in a plastic quart-sized bag. Most items can be included in checked bags, except for explosives, chemicals and flammable items.
When checking a bag, United Airlines charges each passenger a checked bag fee of $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second bag. For passengers bringing along electronic devices, some like cell phones cannot be used at all during the flight and others can be used only after takeoff and before landing.
