Northwest Airlines Rules of Luggage to Take on Board

After Delta Airlines acquired Northwest Airlines in October 2008, all of Northwest's reservations and booking functions merged with Delta, and Delta now controls all carry-on baggage allowances and restrictions. Because these restrictions may change at any time, check Delta's website before your next flight.
  1. Carry-on Baggage

    • Delta passengers are allowed to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item free of charge. Carry-on baggage is defined as a briefcase, camera bag, diaper bag, laptop computer or one item of a similar or smaller size. Items brought on board that do not count toward the personal item allowance include umbrellas, jackets, food or drink items, duty-free merchandise and special items such as strollers and child restraint seats. For individuals with disabilities, items such as wheelchairs or crutches also do not count toward the personal item allowance.

    Size

    • Carry-on bags must not exceed 45 linear inches (or 115 cm) in combined length, width and height and be no heavier than 40 pounds. Delta provides approximate sizes for acceptable areas where carry-on baggage may be stowed during the flight, but note that these areas may vary depending upon the aircraft. Smaller, regional flights may have smaller dimensions. Baggage intended to be put under the seat must not exceed 9 by 14 by 22 inches (or 45 inches total). Overhead stowage must not exceed 10 by 14 by 36 inches (or 60 inches total). Closet stowage is also limited to 72 inches total or 4 by 23 by 45 inches. The airline may further limit space based on available space at any time.

    Pets

    • Passengers may bring one pet (dogs, cats or household birds) per person on board for a fee of $125 each way within the United States and Canada, $200 internationally and for $75 if traveling to Brazil. One exception: You may bring two pets of the same size and species if they are small enough to fit in one kennel, which will count as one carry-on item. Pets must be at least eight weeks old and small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you in a kennel. The pet(s) must remain in the kennel, with the door closed, during the entire flight. Note that Delta also limits the total number of pets allowed per flight.
