Carry-On Luggage Rules for Different Airlines

If you're traveling anytime soon, you can save yourself much grief by reading your airline's carry-on restrictions before you get to the airport. Carry-on bags that do not adhere to the measurements required by the airline might end up costing you extra. Also remember to pack all sharp objects, tools, firearms, sporting goods and liquids exceeding three ounces into your checked-in luggage. Rules for carry-on bags differ for United, AirTran and Spirit airlines.
  1. United Airlines

    • You may carry one hand-carried bag and one personal item--either a purse, briefcase of laptop--on any United flight. Your carry-on bag must fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. Ensure that it is in no larger than 9 by 14 by 22 inches or 45 linear inches. If your carry-on is larger than this, you will be asked to check it. In addition to your one carry-on and one personal item, you can bring canes, crutches and other medical assistive devices on board. Umbrellas, child safety seats, infant restraint devices, coats, hats, snacks and books can also be brought onboard along with your carry-on baggage and personal item. Liquids, aerosols and gels less than 100 milliliters must be kept in a transparent plastic bag for customs check.

    AirTran Airways

    • All passengers are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item. The carry-on bag should not be longer than 24 inches long, 18 inches wide and 13 inches tall and should be able to fit under the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin. Personal items such as a laptop or briefcase much not be larger than 17 inches long, 12 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall. Musical instruments and garment bags will count as a personal item. Knives, scissors, disposable razors and other sharp objects are prohibited. However, if you use syringes for medication, you may carry them on board with you. Liquids, aerosols and gels should not exceed three ounces and must be kept in a transparent plastic bag for customs check.

    Spirit Airlines

    • Carry-on bags should not be greater than 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches and should fit in the aircraft's overhead bin compartment. If you have a child's car seat, you may bring that on board with you, too. In addition to one carry-on bag, you may bring one personal item that does not exceed dimensions of 16 inches by 14 inches by 12 inches. On top of your personal item and carry-on bag, you may also bring a camera, umbrella, infant diaper bad, assistive devices, a coat, hat or scarf, stroller, snacks, books or magazines. These items will not be counted toward your carry-on allowance, and you do not have to pay extra to carry them aboard.
