Required Documents for Airline Travel in the U.S.

After the Sept.11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Transportation Security Administration implemented new requirements and procedures for airline travel within the U.S.
  1. Tickets

    • Though most airlines don't process paper tickets any longer, passengers are issued confirmation codes. This code is required at check-in to locate your reservation.

    Boarding Pass

    • Each person seeking to pass though the security checkpoint to enter the gate area must have a boarding pass. Boarding passes can be obtained from the ticket counter, by checking in at home via the Internet or at self-serve kiosks.

    Identification

    • Each passenger age 18 and older must present a valid form of identification. This can include passport, drivers license, military ID, airline ID or a permanent resident card.

    Traveling with Children

    • Though children aren't required to have photo identification, each child must be issued a boarding pass from the airline.

    Baggage

    • If you checked a bag with the airline, you will be issued a baggage claim tag. This tag is coded with the same sequence of numbers that was affixed to your luggage when it was checked with the airline. This will be required if your luggage doesn't arrive at your destination.
