Packing Restrictions for Air Travel

Air travel became more restricted following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Transportation Security Administration placed strict rules on what and how much of certain items can be brought on board to protect the skies from unscrupulous travelers and tragic events.
  1. Rules

    • Liquid products packed in carry-on bags must be in 3.4-oz. containers or smaller and placed in a one quart-size plastic zipped bag. Full-size liquid bottles must be in checked baggage.

    Prohibited Items

    • Items not permitted for air travel include gases, corrosives, flammables, poisons, pesticides, infectious materials, explosives, weapons and dry ice.

    Exceptions

    • Passengers may carry acceptable amounts of liquid-type medications and liquids required for certain medical conditions or disabilities on board. Mothers with babies or small children may carry baby formula, breast milk and juice.

    Size

    • Checked bags should weigh no more than 50 lbs. and measure no more than 62 inches in circumference. Carry-on bags must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

    Warnings

    • Carry-on bags cannot contain liquids placed in fold-over plastic sandwich bags. Every airline has its own size and weight restrictions. You may have to pay an extra fee for bags that are over-sized or too heavy.
