Hand Carry Restrictions for International Air Travel

Travelers flying internationally should be knowledgeable about carry-on allowances and restrictions. Being aware of what is allowed by security before flying will help the traveler be more efficient.
  1. Size

    • Check with your specific carrier before flying, as size restrictions can vary with each carrier. Most carriers allow travelers one hand bag (e.g. purse or laptop) and one carry-on bag. The dimensions of the carry-on bag should not exceed 9-by-4-by-22 inches and 13lbs.

    Liquids

    • All carry-on baggage will be screened. All liquids must be in containers less than 3 oz. and should be placed in separate, 1-quart, zipper-top, clear bags for security officers to check. The containers must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be fastened closed. Travelers with medication larger than 3 ozs. must declare them at the security checkpoint.

    Prohibited Items

    • Travelers should be aware of prohibited items when packing their carry-on case. The TSA's official website has a complete list of prohibited items. Items such as razors, for instance, can be packed but only if they are disposable, as of December 2010.
