United Airlines checked-baggage policies for travel to and from Canada, the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Airlines differ from international baggage policies. As of Jan. 14, 2010 the fee for the first checked bag is $25 and the fee for the second is $35. United passengers receive a discount on their checked luggage if they check in for their flight online and pay for luggage prior to the flight. The length plus the width plus the height of your checked luggage must not exceed 62 inches and it may not weigh more than 50 pounds. Checking more than two bags or checking bags that are oversized or overweight incur passengers an additional fee of $50 per bag. All items in your checked luggage must follow the checked baggage guidelines set by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
United Airlines passengers may not board with a carry-on item that is larger than 9-by-14-by-22 inches. Your item must fit into the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you or it will be considered checked luggage. Rules for carry-on luggage apply for all United flights, domestic and international. You are permitted one carry-on and one personal item per flight. Purses, laptops, backpacks, briefcases and diaper bags are considered personal items. Food and beverages purchased inside the airport terminal are permitted on board United flights.
United passengers traveling with children are permitted to bring baby items in addition to carry-on and personal item allowance. Strollers, car seats and baby formula are all permitted. Strollers are checked at the gate and returned upon arrival at your destination. If your child is a lap baby you must also check your car seat. Baby formula is permitted on board in quantities in excess of the 3-1-1 rule, so long as you declare it at security. Passengers with medications and medical equipment may bring aboard their equipment in addition to their carry-on allowance.
