According to the United Airlines website, the carry-on baggage regulation states that luggage must be small enough to fit underneath an airplane seat or in the compartments above. Specifically, luggage must not be more than 9 inches by 14 inches by 22 inches, or 45 linear inches. Baggage that is larger than this measurement must be checked in.
United Airline charges fees for passengers who need to check their luggage. Fees are per person, per bag, and only count for one-way travel. For tickets purchased prior to January 14, 2010, the charge is $20 for one piece of luggage and $30 for an additional bag. Passengers who booked their tickets after January 14, 2010 are charged $25 for one bag and $35 for a second bag. These fees are for air travel within the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Checking more than two pieces of luggage, or checking luggage that weighs more than 50 lbs., costs passengers additional money. Traveling on United Airlines within or between North American countries or regions costs passengers $100 per item. This price increases for international destinations.
Passengers who fly United First or United Business classes are exempt from checked baggage fees for their first two bags. Baggage fees are subject to change.
