A ticket is by far the most important item for train travel. Sometimes you can purchase one on the train, but a lot of companies insist you buy in advance. Booking early can save you money on some trains, as advanced fares are regularly cheaper. On Amtrak, it makes sense to book in plenty of time, as you must have an assigned seat, and trains can sell out. This is not the case with all other companies, but it is a good idea to check beforehand.
Depending on how long you will be gone for, you will need to take a varying amount of luggage. If you are packing for more than two or three nights, it may be desirable to take a suitcase. If you are just away for a couple of days, then a bag should suffice. It is a good idea to check how much storage space there will be on the train. If you know it's limited and the train will be busy, it is easier to travel as light as possible.
Some train companies will offer concessionary rates for seniors, children students, veterans and others. If you buy one of these tickets, you must carry appropriate identification at all times. Some concessions only require a standard photo identification, such as a driving license, while others ask for additional proof. On an Amtrak train, people traveling at a senior rate only have to show photo identification, whereas a student must also carry a Student Advantage Card or International Student Identity Card.
If you are traveling on a train that crosses a border into another country, then you must carry a passport or another form of accepted identification. A passport is always acceptable, but if you don't have one you should check with the company about other documents you can use. On Amtrak, you must specify what identification you will be carrying, and provide certain information such as age, gender and nationality. If you provide the wrong information, then you may be subject to questioning.
For an overnight journey it's not a bad idea to take some items to help you sleep. A sleeping bag or small blanket is fairly easy to carry, as is an inflatable pillow. It can be difficult to sleep on a train, so items such as earplugs and a sleeping mask can help negate noise and light. A small toilet bag with items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste and soap is also desirable for sleeper services. If you suffer from severe motion sickness, a drug such as Dramamine may help.
