Places to Travel by Train

As early as 1550, Wagonways, known as roads of rails, were used in Germany, and the race for places to travel by train began. Railroads conjure visions of romantic periods of past decades around the world by the cinema and novels. Rail travel in the United States and Europe continues to flourish, with each country containing destinations and stops that are vast and varied.
  1. Atlantic Coast

    • The Amtrak Empire offers service to Niagara Falls.

      Amtrak (amtrak.com) trains offer service from Miami to eastern Canada. The Silver Service/Palmetto route proceeds between Miami and New York City. Destinations can include Orlando and Disney World, Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia. Change trains in New York City for the Amtrak Maple Leaf to Toronto or the Empire route to Niagara Falls. The Acela Express is a high speed train with frequent service between Washington, D.C., New York City and Boston.

    Grand Canyon

    • Visit the Grand Canyon via the Grand Canyon Railway.

      Head to the Grand Canyon via a train. The Grand Canyon Railway (thetrain.com) specializes in a scenic train tour from Williams, Arizona, (30 miles west of Flagstaff) to the Grand Canyon. William can be reached via Amtrak's Southwest Chief route. Pick up the Southwest in either Chicago or Los Angeles or designated stops in between.

    Cross-Country

    • Amtrak trains follow the sun and back again with its cross-country routes. One example is the California Zephyr, which travels between Sacramento, California, to Chicago, Illinois, or the Southwest Chief (Los Angeles to Chicago). From Chicago, the Amtrak Lake Shore Limited continues on to New York City. Amtrak's Sunset Limited travels the most southern route between Los Angeles and New Orleans.

    Pacific Coast

    • The Amtrak Cascade route runs between Eugene and Portland, Oregon, to Vancouver, Canada. Some of the stations the Cascade makes in Washington State include, Seattle, Tacoma and passes through Mount St. Helens and other scenic vistas. Passengers can also find schedules for trains travel between Seattle and Los Angeles.

    Alaska

    • Alaska Rail (alaskarailroad.com) is the train to sit back with a front-row seat of viewing unspoiled nature. The service of this line offers two classes of service heading in either direction between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Stop off at one of the point of interest stops containing glaciers, fjords, small towns and the Gold Creek Canyon.

    Europe

    • Point-to-point trips offer an ever-changing landscape view. An example of train service within France is via the Eurostar (eurostar.com), which services England and Belgium also. The TGV (tgv-Europe.com) handles France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Germany, while Thalys (thalys.com) covers France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Other major lines serving Europe include Deutsche Bahn (bahn.de) of Germany, Renfe (renfe.com) from Spain, Elvira -- Hungarian (mav.hu) of Hungary, Ferrovie (ferroviedellostato.it) of Italy and the overnight Elipsos train (elipsos.com) for multiple countries.

    Other Destinations

    • Train travel destinations are also found in other areas, including Australia, Central and South America, Africa and Asia. These regions provide scheduled passenger service and tour trains to points of interest.
