Short Train Trips in the Yukon

The Yukon, Canada's westernmost territory, is bordered by Alaska to the west and the Arctic to the north. The barely inhabited wilderness -- population less than 35,000 as of June, 2010 -- offers rafting, hiking, wildlife viewing, historical sites, biking and plenty of winter sports. Riding the rails is a wonderful way to see the scenery, and short train trips in the area are popular as shore excursions for tourists from cruise ships that travel along Alaska's Inside Passage.

The rail route was originally a commercial enterprise, but in 1988 it was reconstituted as a tourism enterprise. The first 67 miles of track, from Skagway to Carcross, Yukon, is utilized for three different train trips. The railroad is designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
