Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak's web site in the "Resources" section below. On the web site, you can book your train reservations via Amtrak's Fare Finder. You can also navigate the site if you have a PDA, Blackberry or other handheld device.
If you ordered your tickets online or by phone, pick them up at a ticket agent or at one of the Quik-Trak kiosks that can be found at many Amtrak locations (you'll need to enter your reservation number). If you've booked your trip far in advance, you can also request that your tickets be mailed to you.
Pack food if you travel coach, or treat yourself to a meal in the dining car that is available for all passengers. The menu reflects regional specialties.
Take the Metrolink commuter rail line right to Union Station from Orange and Ventura Counties. Metrolink offers a 25 percent discount for adults traveling on weekends.
Travel in a group and book a Superliner Suite, which accommodates up to six passengers with comfortable sofas and armchairs.
See the train attendant upon boarding to help you find your seat. If you are traveling coach you will be given your seat assignment.
Find your sleeper car with help from the boarding attendant. You will have your own car steward to help you along the trip with any items you need, such as fresh towels.
Baggage will be taken care of by your sleeper car attendant, and if you're riding coach, by the train attendant.
Ride mass transit (including a streetcar) for free everyday throughout Portland's Fareless Square, which includes the majority of the downtown area.
Consider getting around Portland on foot. It has short blocks that are easy to navigate. By staying in the downtown area, you can save money by seeing the sights up close and personal.
Utilize the lounge area of the Portland Train station. The hours of operation are Monday to Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
