Choose a passenger train service. Traveling by train in California is limited to Amtrak; however, Amtrak features two routes to San Luis Obispo on their Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner trains.
Select a local station for your departure. Whether you are a native or a tourist, you will need to find the nearest station. Amtrak has numerous stations throughout the Los Angeles area, but be aware that smaller stations don't always offer full services.
Determine when you want to travel. Amtrak's Web site is a quick way to find information regarding train schedules and fares. Obtain a train schedule and establish a timeline for your trip. Prepare to be flexible with travel dates to get the best value.
Choose onboard accommodations. The Coast Starlight train which provides service to San Luis Obispo on its route to Seattle offers multiple seating options for longer trips, while the Pacific Surfliner, which terminates in Paso Robles, offers only first-come, first-served coach seats and reserved business class seats.
Reserve and purchase your tickets. Amtrak offers many reservation and payment options once you have determined your departure time and date and your seating preference. Look for discounts before you book tickets online or by phone (1-800-USA RAIL), or ask in person at an Amtrak station.
Pick up your tickets. Tickets can be delivered to you through the U.S. mail or by express delivery if you have reserved tickets in advance. You can also pick them up in person at the station before departure.
