Instructions

  1. Book Your Ticket to San Antonio

    • 1

Book your tickets via the Amtrak Web site (see Resources below). Use the "Fare Finder" tool to select your itinerary. There are two routes to choose from, both direct.

    • 2

Book your ticket by phone by calling Amtrak at (800) 872-7245.

    • 3

Book the 2 Sunset Limited. You'll need to set aside about 30 hours of travel time, not including layovers or the possibility of a train change. This train only travels three times a week between Los Angeles and San Antonio.

    • 4

Approach a uniformed Red Cap agent for baggage assistance. At Los Angeles Union Station, they're everywhere! You can carry on two pieces of luggage on either train and check up to three.

    • 5

Ask if you don't know what to do. The Los Angeles Union Station has four train lines that run in and out, so watch signs closely.

    • 6

Give yourself more options by booking the 422 Texas Eagle, which departs daily and arrives in San Antonio in about 30 hours. You'll have no shortage of itinerary options.

Find Ways to Enjoy the Travel Time

    • 7

Reserve a digEplayer and pick it up at Los Angeles Union Station. It comes with all of your favorite entertainment, from television shows to videos and films.

    • 8

Watch the passing scenery. The view-friendly lounge is not only a great place to snack, but also a great choice for sight-seeing. The largest windows on both trains are usually found here. You can also mingle with other passengers in this common area available to both coach and first class passengers.

    • 9

Make your lunch and dinner reservations. It's so much more fun to eat aboard a train. Dining cars on these trains are just like a restaurant, with hot meals prepared on board and white tablecloth service. Breakfast is more casual and doesn't require reservations.

    • 10

Enjoy the overnight stay. The Texas Eagle has expanded leg room since everything is bigger in Texas! If you book a sleeper car, you'll be happy to find that each train has several different bedroom layouts for everyone from the kids to mobility-limited adults.

    • 11

Get a workout on the stairs. Both trains are Amtrak Superliners. They have 2 stories, with most bedrooms situated on the second floor.
