Choose a station. San Diego offers multiple choices for departure. If you are close to the Downtown area, San Diego's Central Station and Old Town stations are both open late; however, Old Town does not offer ticketing.
Take advantage of the convenience of bus terminals run by the train service. Amtrak trains offer bus connections to popular tourist destinations like Sea World and the San Diego Zoo.
Be prepared for train transfers in Los Angeles. Amtrak offers many trains from San Diego to Los Angeles; however, there are fewer daily connections to Paso Robles. There are approximately twelve daily trains to Los Angeles, but only four daily trains from Los Angeles to Paso Robles.
Use your layover in Union Station for trips to nearby attractions. Walk across the street for an authentic Mexican meal on Olvera Street or take the Los Angeles subway system to Hollywood Boulevard and stroll along the Walk of Fame.
Book tickets on the Pacific Surfliner from San Diego to Los Angeles. Amtrak's only rail service from San Diego to Los Angeles is the Pacific Surfliner train. It offers both coach- and business-class seats. Trains begin running at 6:15 a.m. The last daily train departs at 9:15 p.m.
Choose to travel to Paso Robles via the Pacific Surfliner or transfer to a Coast Starlight train. The Coast Starlight route travels from Los Angeles to Seattle once a day, leaving Los Angeles at 10:15 a.m. This train offers sleeper cars and complete meals in the dining car.
Be aware of discounts for which you are eligible. Amtrak offers discounts for students and seniors, as well as for members of AAA. In addition, reserving seats early will result in less expensive fares.
