Get tickets for travel. You'll want to try to book in advance online via the Amtrak Web site (see Resources below) or over the phone (800) 872-7245. You can also go to the San Antonio train station where the ticketing counter is open daily.
Depart from San Antonio station at 7 a.m. The station is located at 350 Hoefgen Street. This Lone Star station is heavy with Spanish-Mexican architecture.
Watch where you're going. The San Antonio Station hosts both the Texas Eagle and the Sunset Limited Amtrak train lines. Both frequently arrive and depart at similar times.
Arrive early and take advantage of nearby attractions. The Alamo is a short 1-mile cab ride away. The San Antonio Children's Museum can be reached on foot.
Park the car. At the station, both short-term and long-term parking spaces are available. Only 18 short-term parking spaces exist for drop-off. Long-term parking is four blocks from the station at the Marina Parking Garage.
Count the station stops. St. Louis is the 18th stop along the route.
Sleep tight. The 22 Texas Eagle requires one overnight stay. You can either sleep in a reclining chair in coach or book a bedroom in first class.
Plan to arrive at the St. Louis Amtrak station at 7:39 a.m. Lucky for you, this newly-constructed station is a much more convenient way to reach downtown St. Louis than its predecessors, which are also located in the area.
Pick up your checked baggage. Baggage claim opens at 3:30 a.m. and closes at midnight. Even if the 22 Texas Eagle is late, you have plenty of time to claim your bags.
