Visit CityRail's Web site (see Resources below) and find that it's available in over 12 different languages to serve the diverse population of Sydney and greater New South Wales. It contains extensive information on train times.
To plan a specific trip, go to CityRail's "Transportation Infoline" Web page (see Resources below).
Notice that not all of CityRail's lines operate on the weekends. Many also do not operate late at night, but there is intermittent parallel bus service that provides transportation for the affected routes and times.
Review the schedule for departure times of the train from each station in the line. Make sure that you have chosen the correct direction of travel for your needs. You should also visit the scheduled track work site to confirm that operation will be as scheduled.
Click "timetables" from the choices listed along the top of the site. This link will take you to a chart of suburban, intercity, and regional lines. Select the route you're interested in and determine whether you need "WD" (weekday times) or "WE" (weekend times).
Understand that public transportation is one of the largest areas of expenditure for the government of New South Wales. Providing comprehensive rail and bus transport throughout the region is high on the list of priorities for this government. Evidence of this can be seen in the ongoing expansion and refurbishment projects undertaken each year.
Choose among CityRail's different types of passenger rail service. You'll find metro or subway-style underground trains, an overland commuter rail system to provide transportation to and from the suburbs, as well as a rail system linking urban sites throughout Sydney.
Use CityRail's bus service to navigate corridors where passenger rail service is non-existent. These are operated by private-sector contractors but their schedules appear in CityRail timetables.
Find a schedule of fares on CityRail's Web site. These are divided into Day, Commuter and Leisure Travel categories.
Use the fare calculator to determine the price for travel from station to station.
Review the ticket options under the Leisure Travel section for the best deals for visitors to Sydney and New South Wales. Here you'll find fares that cover travel for a day or several days, depending on your need.
