Regulations for Transporting Canada Car Seats

Canadian car seat regulations vary in each province. Some provinces also have booster seat legislation that you should be aware of if traveling between provinces or in Canada from another country. Generally, after your child reaches 40 pounds, he can begin to ride in a booster seat rather than a car seat. It is also important to ensure that your child restraint system has not expired and is properly installed in your vehicle.
  1. British Columbia

    • In the province of British Columbia, your child must ride in a rear-facing car seat until he weighs 20 lbs, and is at least one year of age. He can be placed in a front facing car seat if he is under 40 lbs. British Columbia also has booster seat legislation, which restricts children under the age of nine or under 4 ft. 9 inches tall from riding without being secured in a booster seat.

    Alberta and Saskatchewan

    • Alberta and Saskatchewan have similar regulations for car seats. Your child must use a car seat until he weighs over 40 lbs. In Alberta, if your child reaches the age of six before he weighs 40 lbs he also no longer needs to ride in a car seat. Both provinces do not have any legislation in place for booster seats

    Manitoba

    • The province of Manitoba requires that you secure your child in a car seat until he reaches the minimum weight of 50 lbs and is over the age of five. Similar to Alberta and Saskatchewan, Manitoba does not have legislation in place for booster-seat use.

    Ontario

    • Ontario regulations state that your child must use a rear-facing car seat until he reaches 20 lbs. After he can be placed in a front-facing car seat until he reaches 40 lbs. Ontario's booster-seat legislation requires that your child must ride in a booster seat until he reaches the height of 4 ft. 9 inches, or a minimum weight of 80 lbs, or be at least the age of eight.

    Quebec

    • The province of Quebec has different regulations from the other provinces. Quebec requires that your child use a car seat or booster seat until he reaches a minimum seat height of 25 inches. The child restraint system you choose to use must meet your child's height and weight.
