Rental Car Regulations

Every rental car company has its own set of regulations, laid out in its rental agreements. Read the agreement carefully so you know what you're getting into. Beyond that, there are some standard requirements that most renters must meet.
  1. Age Requirement

    • Most car companies have a minimum age to rent a vehicle. For most, you must be at least 25 years old though occasionally you will find a company with a minimum age of 21. These companies typically charge an extra fee for under-25 drivers.

    Driver's License

    • You must have a valid driver's license to rent a car. In the United States, you must have a driver's license valid in the U.S., Canada, or other countries recognized by the rental company. Each company has its own regulations so check ahead of time whether your country's driver's license is accepted.

    Insurance

    • Your rental car will need to be insured before it leaves the lot. Rental car companies will try to offer you their liability and collision insurance, but chances are your own car insurance will cover your rental car. Check with your insurance company ahead of time and pay extra for the rental car company's insurance, if necessary.
