Rental Car Price Strategy

When you go on vacation, one expense you will likely need to plan for is car rental. You may need to rent a car because you are flying to your destination and need a car once you get there or just to save wear and tear on your own car during a road trip. Whatever your reason for renting a car, there are steps you can take to save money on the rental.
  1. Choose a Car

    • Typically, a larger car costs more to rent than a smaller car. To save money, you should choose the smallest rental car you and your family can comfortably use. When deciding on a car size, don't forget to allow room for all family members, car seats for children, your luggage and souvenirs that you will need to transport back home.

    Shop Around

    • Check several discount travel websites as well as the websites for the major car rental companies. You may find cheaper rates on discount sites, but the companies themselves may offer discounts at certain times of the year. Compare prices at rental locations at the airport and nearby. Locations at the airport may charge more for car rentals. Also check for last-minute deals if you will need the rental car within the week.

    Ask About Discounts

    • If you are a member of a group that typically gets discounts on goods or services, ask if those discounts may be used. Senior citizens, AARP or AAA members, and current or former military personnel are among the groups that may receive a discount.

    Cut Out the Extras

    • Car rental companies will offer you insurance for an additional fee. However, you may not need this insurance. Check your own car insurance policy to see if rental cars are covered. If so, you do not need to buy extra insurance from the rental company. Your credit card company may also include car rental insurance, so check with them as well.

Bring your own car seats for children whenever possible. You may be able to rent car seats as well, but this will be an additional charge.

Car rental companies don't require that you return the car with a full tank of gas. But you always should fill up the tank before returning a rental car because, if you don't, fuel charges will apply. These charges will also be much greater than you would pay if you filled up the tank yourself at a gas station.
