How to Check Car Seats

It can be tough traveling with small children. Aside from your luggage, you may have to carry your child and bring along a car seat, a stroller and a diaper bag. If you have not bought a seat for your infant on the plane but are still traveling with a car seat, you will have to check the car seat at the gate when you are boarding. Generally, gate-checking an infant car seat is free of charge.

Check with your airline to find out about gate-checking procedures. Some airlines only allow you to gate-check one item, which can be a problem if you have both a car seat and a stroller with you. If the airline only accepts one gate-checked item, check the car-seat with the rest of your luggage. To protect it from damage, place it in the original box or a similar box before checking it.
