How to Install a Car Seat Without the Base on an Airplane

Flying with a child doesn't mean leaving the car seat behind or checking it with your luggage. Using a car seat on a plane, even without the base, keeps your child safe and provides you with peace of mind while flying. Installing the car seat when on the plane is a little different than in a car because there's less space in which to maneuver. Once the seat is installed, your child is ready to experience the wonder of flying on a plane.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up the arms of the airplane seat to give you more room to make adjustments to the car seat.

    • 2

Place the car seat in the airplane seat, facing forward or back, depending on the child's age, weight and specifications of the car seat.

    • 3

Thread the seat belt and buckle of the airplane seat belt through the car seat's seat belt path. The car seat manual shows exactly where this area is located on your specific car seat when used without the base.

    • 4

Connect the airplane seat belt and press down on the car seat while tightening the belt. Using your knee or full weight to press down on the car seat helps secure it correctly.

    • 5

Place your child in the car seat and secure him per your car seat instructions. Put the airplane seat arms down to complete the installation.
