DOT Hazmat Certification

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is responsible for ensuring the proper training and certification of hazardous materials (hazmat) employees under Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). PHMSA is an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
  1. Employer Requirements

    • Hazmat employers are required to train, test and certify employees. In addition, employers are to develop and retain records regarding current training (for three preceding years) for each employee (for the period of employment and 90 days after).

    Training

    • Some components of hazmat training include general awareness and familiarization, safety, security awareness, driver training (necessary for each hazmat employee operating a motor vehicle) and in-depth security training (if a security plan is required).

    Training Records

    • Hazmat training records are required to include the name of the hazmat employee, completion date of the most recent training, name and address of hazmat trainer and certification that the employee has been trained and tested.
