How to Travel to Orchid Island in Taiwan

Orchid Island, also known as "Lanyu" in Mandarin, is a small island roughly 37 miles off the southeastern coast of Taiwan. Its name is from the large variety of orchids that used to cover the island. Unfortunately, the flowers have long since disappeared. Covering barely 30 square miles, the island is one of the most noted tourist sites of Taiwan. Orchid Island is mostly inhabited by the Yamis, an aboriginal community that relies on the ocean to make a living. Coastal rocks that have been carved by wind and waves into interesting shapes are one of the most famous features of the island.
