How to Travel to Calabria, Italy

Calabria is a region in Italy at the southern tip of the boot. Located just south of Naples, it is the closest region to the island of Sicily. With its capital of Catanzaro, it also has the distinction of being the poorest region in the country. Despite this, there are ample reasons to visit Calabria, including a coastline lined with cliffs, mountains where it occasionally snows, towns with medieval architecture and wineries. You can access Calabria by car or train from Naples.

Instructions

  1. Traveling to Calabria by Car

    • 1

Rent a car in Naples. There are numerous car rental offices for major companies near Naples Airport, including Europcar, Avis and Dollar

    • 2

Take Route A3 from Naples, which is the main road into Calabria. Once in Calabria, A3 stradles the western coast of the region.

    • 3

Drive down A3 with extra caution. Italian drivers sometimes drive fast and carelessly. On top of that, driving in this region can be dangerous, with unmaintained roads and sharp turns. A3 goes through the mountains, and in the winter, the road can become slick with snow.

    • 4

Get around Calabria using other routes through the region, including SS106 along the southern and eastern coasts, SS112 through the mountains and SS18 along the northwest coast of the region. Once again, drive these roads with caution.

    • 5

Look for accommodations in the region's major towns, including Catanzaro, Reggio Calabria and the beach resort of Bagnara Calabra. There are also plenty of youth hostels in Calabria.

    Traveling to Calabria by Eurail

    • 6

Buy a Eurail pass either online or in Italy. Many of Italy's major cities, such as Rome, Naples and Salerno, have Eurail access to Reggio Calabria.

    • 7

Take the train down to Reggio Calabria. Keep in mind that Reggio Calabria is the only destination Eurail offers in Calabria.

    • 8

Find a place to stay in Reggio Calabria. In addition to hotels, there are plenty of youth hostels that offer cheaper rates.
