Take the train. Italy is home to one of the world's finest rail systems. High-speed trains run frequently and make travel quite easy between major Italian cities such as Rome and Torino. Use trains to travel from Milan in the north to Florence in the center of Italy to the bustling city of Naples in the south.
Railway stations are often located near a city hub. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the station on the day of departure. Purchase tickets by machine or from a ticket agent at the station.
Many trains are divided into first- and second-class accommodations. First-class compartments usually include individual lighting and plush seating. Second-class seating is similar to many American urban transit systems, with padded seats. You may be asked to present your ticket to the conductor. Loss of tickets can result in a fine in addition to the cost of the ticket, so keep the ticket at hand at all times.
Take a tour bus. Certain tour companies specialize in helping visitors explore a large part of Italy in a short period of time. Tour companies can help you see Italy under the direction of English-speaking guides without much preparation or planning time from you. Tour buses are often air-conditioned. A tour bus might be your best option if you wish to see certain regions of Italy that are hard to reach by train, such as Tuscany.
Take a cruise. Italy is surrounded by water on three sides. Many Italian cities, including Venice and Naples, are easily accessible by boat. A cruise can be a relaxing way to see places such as Genoa, Sorrento and Umbria in a single week. Taking a cruise means you need not haul luggage from place to place, worry about where to eat or attempt to find your hotel in an unfamiliar city.
