Check the train schedule. Notice that there are two main departure points for buses in Civitavecchia, one in the station and one in the port. Plan accordingly, depending on your arrival and departure point, as many cruise ships and yachts use Civitavecchia as their departure point in central Italy.
Take note of the the number of trains and buses traveling between Civitavecchia and cities such as Ciampino and Fiumicino, as both of these cities have airports. They are also interesting countryside destinations with a lot of Roman and Papal history.
Research seaside travel. Many of the small beach, resort and cruise ship towns north and south of Civitavecchia are serviced by local trains and buses. The public ferries that use the port of Civitavecchia go to Sardinia, Genoa, Spain and Tunisia. If you wish to tour the seaside via boat, it may be possible to rent or hire one privately.
Make reservations for guided walking and cycling tours in the area. Book your tickets for these tours as far in advance as possible, especially during the high season.
