How to Tour Italy on a Budget

Traveling to Italy can be quite expensive, but if you do some preparation, there are a lot of ways to save money. The two biggest expenses are usually airfare and hotel accommodations, but when you travel during the off-season and on low-travel days, you can save big.

      Travel in the off-season. According to Frommer's, the cheapest times to travel to Italy are the beginning of January to the middle of March and the beginning of November to the middle of December. Traveling during these times will offer cheaper airline and hotel prices and smaller crowds.

      Take a free guided tour on the Via Appia Antica. This is an old road that comes out of Rome. On Sundays, cars are banned from travelling on this route, so you must walk. But it's a scenic walk. Along the way you will discover numerous ancient relics. The road has a history that dates back to 312 B.C. Various cafes and eateries are located around the outskirts of the trail.

      Take full advantage of the "free" days that Rome offers. On the last Sunday of each month, you can tour the Vatican at no charge. You also can tour the Musei Capitolini for free on the last Sunday of the month.

      Visit the Galleria Nazionale Di San Luca for free any Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the last Sunday of the month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Here you can view artwork by Canova, Raffaello and Van Dyck. When you are finished there, visit the sculptures of Rome at Aula Ottaganale.

      Take a scenic tour from the Archeobus. For a one-time, small fee you can cruise by bus through all of Rome for the day.

      Look for signs that say "Tax Free for Tourists." Most items purchased in Italy will have a standard tax added on to the price. Tourists are exempt from this tax when they spend a minimum, which can vary, at one location. Ask the cashier for the receipt and take it to Customs, which is at the airport, and ask them to stamp it. When you get home, mail it back and you will be sent a check for the difference within 90 days.

      Consider public transportation, such as the euro train, while you are in Italy. Not only is it cheaper but you also save more money by not having to park.
