How to Enjoy Milan, Italy for Free

Milan, located in northern Italy, is one of that country's largest cities. It is best known for its fashion, cuisine and as a base for exploring the wine and ski regions of Lombardy. However, Milan also offers a number of free attractions--for those who know where to look.

      Explore the Galleria Vittoria Emanuele. Opened in 1867, this spectacular retail passageway is considered to be one of the oldest shopping centers in the world. The Galleria, which connects the Duomo to La Scala, is adorned with mosaics and high ceilings topped with paned glass skylights. The stores are mostly high-end, but window-shopping is free.

      Meet the creatures of the Civic Aquarium. Milan's Civic Aquarium, located on the northwest side of town features more than 30 tanks, highlighting more than 100 species of fish and aquatic animals from all over the world. The aquarium is open daily and admission is free.

      Join a street festival. Milan loves street festivals. In the warmer months, there seems to be one every weekend, but they don't disappear during the winter. Some of the largest and most popular are St. Ambrose's Day on December 7, the Festa del Naviglio in early June and the fall fashion days.

      Visit the Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte. This 19th century, Neo-classical mansion, located in the Villa Reale neighborhood, houses an extensive collection of 18th and 19th century paintings by Italian artists.
