How to Enjoy San Juan, Puerto Rico for Free

San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, is the second-oldest European city in the Americas. Founded in 1508 by Ponce de Leon, San Juan was an important shipping port and military outpost in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Today, San Juan retains its colonial flavor and combines it with a modern, vital metropolis. It's a fascinating town to visit and offers many free things to do and see.

      Stroll through Old San Juan. The original settlement of San Juan, Old San Juan today consists of more than 400 restored sixteenth- and seventeenth-century buildings lining narrow cobblestone streets. Highlights include the San Juan Cathedral (open to the public for free) and El Convento, a former convent converted into a luxury hotel.

      Tour the Bacardi Rum distillery. Located about 20 minutes from Old San Juan, the Puerto Rico Bacardi distillery offers free tours of their facility. See rum being made and bottled and sample the products after the tour.

      Visit La Fortaleza. The Governor's Mansion, located in a restored sixteenth-century fortress in Old San Juan, is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

      Explore San Juan Cemetery. San Juan Cemetery is located along the Caribbean coastline, just outside of Old San Juan. The scenic cemetery has a red-domed neoclassical chapel in the center, dedicated to Mary Magdalene, surrounded my white marble monuments. Many Puerto Rican patriots and artists are buried there.

      Relax on Condado Beach. Adjacent to Old San Juan, this beach has been a luxury resort area since the 1950s. The area has a European feel with a seaside promenade and sidewalk cafes.
