Vienna, the capital of Austria, boasts a rich history. It was home to the Hapsburg monarchs as well as musicians, Richard Strauss and Mozart. It's a wonderful city to explore. Public transportation is efficient and inexpensive and there are dozens of free attractions and events. Below are just a few.
Explore the Wien Museum. Vienna has more than 100 museums and many of them offer one or more free days per month. One of the more interesting museums is the Wien (Vienna) Museum, located on the Karlsplatz. This museum, which is free each Sunday, houses art and other artifacts from the city's long history. Particularly interesting is the extensive collection late 19th century and early 20th century art and furniture, including several canvasses by Gustav Klimt.
Attend a festival. Vienna hosts dozens of street festivals each year, the majority of which are free. The most popular of these include the summer Music Film Festival, the Life Ball fashion festival in May and the Festwochen in May and June.
Marvel at the Hundertwasser House. This 50-unit apartment building is one of the most visited sites in Vienna. The structure, built between 1983 and 1986, is completely asymetrical, with no straight lines, a colorful exterior and grass and sod on the roof.
Visit the Austrian National Library. This is the oldest--and arguably the most beautiful--ibrary in the world. Among the more than six million items stored there are many historic and rare documents, including collections of papyri, manuscripts, ancient and rare books, maps, globes, music, portraits, graphics, photographs, autographs and posters.
