How to Enjoy Bangkok for Free

Bangkok, the largest city and the capital of Thailand, is a mixture of old and new, modern and traditional. Dubbed the "Venice of the East" because of its many canals, Bangkok offers an array of attractions, scenic vistas and activities--many of them free. Below are just a few things to do in the city without spending any money.

Instructions

    • 1

Relax in Lumpini Park. Located in the heart of downtown Bangkok, this 140-acre park is an oasis in a sea of skyscapers. Relax by the pond, gaze at the statues or join the locals in Tai Chi exercises.

    • 2

Visit the Butterfly Garden. This natural butterfly habitat is located in the Chatuchak District of Bangkok. The building houses more than 500 butterflies of 20 species in a garden-like setting.

    • 3

View the many Buddhist temples. Bangkok's temples (wats) are numerous and each one is more beautiful than the next. A majority of these peaceful places of worship are free and the architecture and adornments are breathtaking. Of particular note are Wat Arun, along the Chao Phraya River; Wat Mahathat, in the Old City; and Wat Traimit, in Chinatown. Go early in the day when the temples are cooler and less crowded.

    • 4

Stroll through Old Bangkok. Old Bangkok is the original section of the city, founded more than 200 years ago. It includes many of the city's most popular (not free) attractions, such as the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Remnants of the original stone walls can still be found as well as numerous restored 18th century buildings.

      Explore the Floating Market.
