How to Spend a Week in Bangkok, Thailand

The largest city in Thailand, Bangkok is an unexpected juxtaposition of ancient customs and modern architecture. Fruit vendors and floating markets exist side by side with towering buildings of glass and cement. The combination of old and new allows visitors to Bangkok the unique opportunity to witness firsthand Thailand's progress and culture.

Instructions

    • 1

Ride the SkyTrain. Bangkok's new SkyTrain system connects the far-flung parts of the city. For a few baht, you can buy point-to-point tickets or an all-day express pass. The trains are clean, air-conditioned and safe. The ticket machines take only coins, and the station attendants in the booth will give change. The SkyTrain allows you to reach most places in Bangkok, and it's worth spending a day simply getting on and off the train to explore different neighborhoods.

    • 2

Venture to Victory Square. Get off the SkyTrain at the Victory Monument stop and explore the street market and the surrounding malls. The neighborhood is mostly Thai, and you won't see many foreigners. Explore the area, don't worry about the stares you'll get from passersby and remember to smile. The area is safe, and it's an excellent opportunity to catch a glimpse of Thai life.

    • 3

Take a water taxi. Boats run up and down the river, and for about 15 baht, they will take you from one end of the city to the other. You can see a different view of the city from the water and escape the exhaust of Bangkok's traffic.

    • 4

Visit the major attractions--the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, the floating market, the national museum and the variety of temples that are scattered around Bangkok. Go early to avoid the crowds, and remember to cover your shoulders. Consult a guidebook before you go for proper attire. In Thailand, it is important to show respect in religious buildings.

    • 5

Stop by Khao San Road. This famed Thailand backpackers' heaven is an experience in itself. Buy cheap T-shirts, summer dresses and other souvenirs for rock-bottom prices. Enjoy a drink while you watch the crowds, and soak up the melee of people from different nationalities.

    • 6

Eat on the street. Bangkok has an abundance of street food, which is cheap, good and readily available. Try pad thai, fresh fruit and, if you're feeling particularly adventurous, some of the fried insects that are available. Be safe when trying street food; don't eat it if it has been sitting out for long, and try to see it cooked in front of you whenever possible.
