How to Inspect the Gauges and Controls of a Semi Cab

Before embarking on a trip, drivers of tractor trailers must inspect their semi to ensure all is in proper working order to the specifications of the Department of Transportation. An important part of this inspection is the cab gauges and controls.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the semi engine with the clutch pedal fully depressed and the gear selector in neutral. Slowly release the clutch and leave the engine idling.

    • 2

Verify that the oil pressure, temperature and voltmeter gauges work properly and all are in normal range. If any of these are reading low, they should build up to a normal level in short order as the engine warms. Any warning lights or buzzers should also quickly end as pressure builds in the engine. Inspect the vehicle's speedometer and tachometer and verify that they are present and free from damage or debris that would make them difficult to read.

    • 3

Watch the air gauges to verify that they work properly. Air pressure should climb to and maintain at 120 psi.

    • 4

Clean and inspect all windows and mirrors for cracks or damage. There should also be no obstruction of view from items such as stickers not required to be in place.

    • 5

Rock the steering wheel back and forth. There should be no more than 10 degrees of play on a 20-inch wheel before the wheels move with these controls.

    • 6

Turn on the control for the semi lights and wipers and check that all work properly. Wiper arms and blades must be secure and operate without fail. Check the left and right signal lights, four way flashers and high beam indicators. Check the heater and defroster to keep the windows clear, and the controls should work easily and without fail.

    • 7

Honk the city and air horns to assure both work properly, and inspect the safety belts to see that they are secure and undamaged.
