How to Apply to Work in the UK

Whether you are transferring to an American-based company in the United Kingdom, or you are moving to make a life change, you must obtain a work permit to work in the United Kingdom. A work permit, or work visa, enables you to hold a job legally in the country for a specified amount of time. Upon receiving the work permit you can then apply for jobs in your field.

Use the online calculator to determine how many points you would earn for your work visa. To be granted a work visa you must earn enough points in your line of work.

    • 2

If you don't have a job, ask a family member or friend to be your sponsor until you find a job in the United Kingdom. You must have someone who will be financially responsible for you until you get a job. If you have a job, you only need a letter from your employer.

    • 3

Download the application or fill the work permit application online. You must set an appointment with the embassy to meet for verification and fingerprinting as well. You may submit all paperwork by mail or at the verification meeting.

    • 4

Search job boards and newspaper classifieds in the United Kingdom for job opportunities upon receiving your work permit. Look for jobs in the field in which you got the work permit. Certain jobs require specific work permits based on your skills.

    • 5

Assemble a CV or resume to take to job interviews with you. Resumes and cover letters in the United Kingdom are just like in the United States. Highlight your experience, past jobs and what skills you can offer to the company.
