How Much Does it Cost to Get a Work Visa to Work in the UK?

American travelers who plan on staying in the UK for more than 90 days must apply for a visa, even if they are going to work.
  1. Types

    • There are a number of different work visas, including Work Permit Holder (most common), Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP), Off Shore Worker, Overseas Domestic Worker, EC Business Association Agreement, Sole Representative, UK Ancestry, Seasonal Agricultural Worker and dependents of any listed above.

    Fee

    • A work visa will cost a couple hundred pounds. The price is subject to change, so check the UK Embassy's website for the current rates (see Resources).

    Free

    • If you qualify for a Vander Elst or Swiss Posted Worker visa, these are free of charge.

    Validity

    • Work visas in the UK are good for up to six months. You must reapply after this time period.

    Proof

    • Check with your employer to determine what type of visa you need to apply for. You will need proof of employment from your employer as part of the application process.
