Before students can apply for a study permit, they need to be accepted by a recognized Canadian school, university or college.
Students must have proof of enough funds for tuition, fees, housing and living expenses, and proof of school acceptance. Students also must have proof of return transportation to their home country.
Students need to complete an application package and submit proof of identity such as a passport. Student must also pass a criminal check and medical examination. The application package and documents must be submitted to a regional visa office.
The cost of a Canadian study permit is $125 as of October 2009. Students should allow 30 days for processing a study permit.
A letter of introduction is sent to approved students. But this is not the study permit. The letter must be presented to immigration officials upon arrival into Canada.
A denial is sent to unapproved students. Reasons for denial vary but include lack of proof of funds, or not passing the criminal check or medical exam.
